Poultry - Chickens, Ducks, Other
Welcome to Hunter's Pony Farm poultry department. We have raised many types of fowl in our time farming. Our favorites are Muscovy Ducks, but we love chickens, too. In this department we would like to share some of the things we have learned while raising our ducks, chickens, banties, and even our rhea. We hope you find this information useful.

Chicken Joke:
A pair of chickens walk up to the circulation desk at the public library as soon as it opens and say, "Buk, buk, buk!" The librarian decides that the chickens want to check out three books, so she picks them out and gives them to the chickens. They leave happy.

A few hours later, the chickens return to the library and appear to be quite vexed. "Buk, but, BUUUUUUK!" they demand. The librarian decides they's fast readers and want to check out three more books. So she finds some and hands them over to the chickens, who promptly leave with the books under their wings.

Just a couple of hours later, the chickens again approach the circulation desk, looking very annoyed. Now they squawk, "Buk, buk, buk, buk, BUUUUUUK!" The librarian, flustered, give in to their demands to check out even more books because she doesn't wan to disturb the other patrons.

Suspicious, however, she follows them to a local park when they leave. Hiding behind a tree, she observes them throwing the books into a pond, when a frog catches them. The frog looks at them, shakes his head in disgust and pitches the books into the water, yelling angrily at the chickens, "Rrredit! Rrredit! Rrredit...!

Why and how roosters crow:
Roosters crow to mark territory and let all the other roosters know that the hens are THEIRS! They also challenge each other and will often fight to the death. Roosters also crow almost every hour. I don't think anyone knows why! Haven't found out yet HOW they do it... If anyone knows, please email me! PMH

Do you need a rooster to get eggs?
Roosters are good for protecting the hens and if you want to raise chicks. No, you do not need a rooster to get eggs. You only need a rooster to get chicks from the eggs. If you want to just have eggs for cooking, then you only need hens. But, if you want to raise chicks, you have to have a rooster to breed with the hens. Hens that don't have a rooster with them lay unfertilized eggs. Hens that have a rooster with them lay fertile eggs.
Funny Info: McDonald's came up with the "Chicken McNuggets" product because their suppliers had old hens who were past their prime. These old hens, known for their dark meat, became "Chicken McNuggets", one of McDonald's most popular products.
