Not everyone can love a snake! Take my husband for instance. When I caught
two large (3 feet) rat snakes living in a cinderblock in our hen house I
decided to relocate them down the street in the woods. It was late, so I
fixed up my special terrarium I use for visiting small animals. I put the
snakes in and duct-taped the wire mesh top onto the glass so they couldn't
push it up.
My attempt sadly failed! Our other visitor, a woman from Germany, came bursting
into our bedroom in the wee hours of the morning screaming hysterically about
snakes. Well, it seems our reptilian visitors had pushed up the top in spite
of my efforts and made their escape into our German friend's bed!
It took us a while to capture them and we had to relocate them right then
rather than wait! Lesson learned. Oh, and my husband forbade the keeping
of snakes in the house from then on!
Throughout my life I have had lizards, snakes, toads, and other reptiles
as well as amphibians of various kinds. Most of my friends and family (not
my kids, they like it) think I am nuts. Some people just can't handle these
species. I am not one of them, I love reptiles!
If you are interested in owning a reptile, then you are one of the folks
who could probably handle it. But, still, if you don't know what you are
doing it can be disaster for you as well as your reptilian friend. Research
the kind of reptile you are interested in. Know its needs, habitat, what
it needs to keep warm (remember, reptiles are cold blooded), and what it
eats. Get some magazines and read about them for a while before you make
a decision. You both will be better off!
