Small Pod Ecosphere

You could call it a science project, the world's lowest maintenance pet or a closed aquarium,but it's the result of space age technology initiated by NASA. The desktop or bookshelf Ecosphere. is a fascinating glimpse into a totally self-contained environment, similar to the Earth's, with an interdependence of animal, plant life and water. There's no fish food or filtration needed; you simply need to follow a few guidelines. Don't expose it to temperatures above 85 degrees or below 60, don't leave it in direct sunlight or let it go more than 60 hours without light (too much light and the algae begins to overproduce; not enough light and the system starves). Light, combined with carbon dioxide in the water, enables the algae to produce oxygen. The shrimp breathe the oxygen in the water and nibble on the algae and bacteria. Two magnets are included that clean the inside of the glass (the outside magnet attracts the one inside, and both are moved up the sides gently). The Ecosphere's a great learning experience for kids and adults alike.
