- The Miniature Horse 1

We are happy to report that one of our readers has sent us some photos for this page. Here is the message I received:

I am a professional trainer of miniature horses and enjoyed reading your web page focusing on minis. I have a huge library of show photos of beautiful horses. You may use any of them for reference on your page.I hope you enjoy them! You may put a link of our websites on as well. One of the great pleasures of the show season is attending the Miniature Horse shows at the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds. Our entire family enjoys these tiny equines and the professional manner in which they are shown and handled.

Miniature Horses come in many colors: bay, buckskin, white, black, appaloosa, palomino, pintaloosa, pinto and many more. They are so beautifully groomed, shown to emphasize the grace and breeding of each animal.

We especially like the jumping and driving classes. We drive our own ponies so it is fun and educational to watch others competing. The jumping classes give the exhibitor as much exercise as the horse since minis are led over the jumps, not ridden, of course.

Seeing the tiny foals in halter classes always elicits ooohs and aahhhs! Their little feet make tic, tic, tic on the pavement surrounding the arena. The miniatures are so cute and easy to handle that children and physically challenged individuals can handle and show them.

There are two major miniature horse registries in the United States. One is the American Miniature Horse Association, which is a closed registry located in Texas. The other is the American Miniature Horse Registry, which allows registration of miniatures that exceed the 34 inch requirement when certain qualifications are met. These animals are divided into various size classes.

Driving is a BLAST!

What is a Miniature Horse?

(The following used by permission from The Oklahoma Miniature Horse Club 1997 Membership Directory.)

The American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) registered American Miniature Horse is a unique breed - an elegant, little scaled-down version of the large size horse - and cannot be taller than 34 inches when measured at the last hairs of the mane. Today's stylish and perfectly proportioned miniatures are the product of nearly 400 years of selective breeding. Although many purchases and breeding of miniature horses have been regularly documented in America since the early 1800s, accurate accounts and pedigrees were not maintained by most breeders until the 1940s. With the recently closed registry of AMHA, breeders will now be required to maintain accurate pedigrees on all of their stock, and foals may not be registered unless both parents are also registered with AMHA.
